<시놉시스>
10년 이상을 한국에서 살던 마숨은 고국 방글라데시로 돌아가게 된다. 하지만 귀향은 그에게 기쁜 것만은 아니다. 그는 같은 날 한국에서 추방당한 이주노동자 노동조합 활동가 세 사람 중 하나이다. 영화 <리터니>는 그의 여행을 따라가며, 가족 상봉의 기쁨, 아들이 돌아오길 간절히 기도했던 어머니, 처음으로 아버지를 만나게 되는 딸의 모습 등을 담는다. 마숨은 또 함께 추방당한 친구들을 만나기 위해 방글라데시와 네팔을 돌아다니며 새로운 운동과 연대를 모색한다.

SYNOPSIS
After living in South Korea for more than a decade, Masum returns to his home in Bangladesh. His homecoming is bittersweet. Masum is one of three leaders of the Migrants Trade Union who were arrested on the same day and deported from Korea. The Returnee follows Masum's journey as he is reunited with his estranged family - a mother who prayed for his return and a daughter who met her father for the first time. Traveling in Bangladesh and Nepal, Masum meets old friends and new allies who continue to struggle for the plight of migrants seeking the Korean Dream.

<작가 의도>
전 작품인 <쫓겨난 사람들>에서는, 한국에서 활동하나 강제추방 당한 이주 활동가들이 아픔을 극복하고 추방 이후의 삶과 활동을 어떻게 꾸려나가고 있는가에 초점을 맞추었다면, 쫓겨난 사람들 2편이라 할 수 있는 이번 작품에서는 이주 활동가들의 가족과 개인사적 측면을 조명해보고 싶었다. 먼 타국에서 오지 않는 아들을 그리워하다가 오히려 강제추방이 잘된 일이라며 좋아하는 마숨의 어머니, 태어나서 처음 낯선 아빠를 만나게 되는 라주의 8살 된 딸 수프리아 등, 이주 투쟁 이면에 숨겨진 가족들의 삶의 투쟁과 추방 이후에도 계속될 이주활동가들의 삶을 그려보았다.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
The previous film The Deported focused on the lives of migrant worker activists in their home countries after being arrested and deported for struggling for their rights in South Korea. The Returnee, which could be considered the second part of this story, highlights the personal lives and families of deported activists. Masum’s mother who wished for her son to be deported from Korea and returned to her; Raju’s 8-year-old daughter who met her father for the first time when he returned to Nepal; this film tells the hidden story behind the struggles of migrant worker activists and their lives as returnees in their home countries.
